Large File Download Optimization

Just about any media file format you care to think about is getting chunkier — file sizes are bulking up due to enhanced functionality, improved graphics, and richer media content. Meanwhile, as Blu-ray and HD DVD become popular release formats, their massive files will be posted online for downloading, too. Akamai offers one solution with its recently announced Large File Download Optimization (LFDO) technology. Built to handle large, bandwidth-intensive video files, LFDO works with VC-1 and MPEG-4 video standards, as well as streaming standard 720p, 1080i, and even 1080p files. One key to the technology: storing, retrieving, and delivering large files by keeping them in clusters of smaller individual file pieces.
