Patent-pending technology compresses JPEG images up to 30 percent without any loss of quality. Price: $80
Sometimes it's easy to overlook workaday apps. But StuffIt, celebrating a remarkable 20th anniversary in a very fast-changing business, deserves another look. Smith Micro's workhorse archive and compression software is now available in a special anniversary edition for the Mac. Surprisingly, StuffIt Deluxe 2009 still finds new ways to compress, expand, secure, and back up even more formats and files. The new edition includes support for Mac OS X Leopard technology including Apple Quick Look, Time Machine, and MobileMe. Working with Quick Look and Time Machine, for example, allows users to view an archive without having to expand it from within Mail, Finder, or any application that supports Quick Look. MobileMe support, meanwhile, enables automatic transfers and archive backups to iDisk via DropStuff and StuffIt Scheduler.
