We're entering a new age of processing power, with new apps and operating systems able to harness potent GPUs. Next-generation operating systems from both Apple (Snow Leopard) and Microsoft (Windows 7), due in mid-2009, will be GPU-ready right out of the box. In October, Nvidia announced the release of its Quadro CX, a graphics card specifically designed to further accelerate certain video and image manipulation in Adobe Creative Suite 4 (CS4). Nvidia's CUDA-enabled plug-in for Premiere Pro CS4, which ships with the card, is said to greatly improve encoding speeds of H.264 video. Photoshop CS4 users can expect more fluid, realtime image rotation, zooming, and panning, while acceleration for After Effects CS4 speeds depth-of-field manipulations and bilateral blur.
