Higher-end scanning

At NAB 2006, FilmLight continued in its quest to be the definer of high-end DI by introducing a considerably faster 4K film scanner, the Northlight 2.

Speed in post is always paramount. The U.K.-based company rates the new device as having up to a 4X increase in scanning — faster than 2fps at 2K and 1fps at 4K.

New features include an infrared scanning option, support for third-party dustbusting applications, and archive/restoration. Northlight 2 scans using 8K CCD line arrays; when reduced to 4K for system use, this results in less aliasing. Also, working with 8K pixels is like having two pixels for every single 4K pixel, yielding greater light capture and improved 12-bit resolution without dither or noise. www.filmlight.ltd.uk
