Many of you already know about our ongoing virtual press conference called The Briefing Room. It's a daily compilation of industry press releases and other resources from our 250 member publicists. It's often the first place to hear about new product releases, even before the news hits the manufacturers' own websites. It's also a good place to track what your colleagues are working on, because many of the announcements concern digital content products, producers, and facilities.

The Briefing Room is open to all member publicists as well as all members of Reel-Exchange. Publicists can join and get user names, passwords, and technical support from Senior Associate Editor Lucy Sutton at briefingroom@digitalcontentproducer.com. Reel-Exchange members can do the same through Community Manager Craig Erpelding at support@reel-exchange.com. If you're eligible, I urge you to participate. The Briefing Room is consistently among our top three site sections for reader popularity. Through RSS feeds, relevant headlines are also distributed to topic-specific sections throughout digitalcontentproducer.com and to the Reel-Exchange.com home page. The Briefing Room is also where our editors look for interesting news releases to pursue — more so than in our inboxes, where we concentrate on NDA and prerelease information, as well as exclusive pitches.

If you are a content producer — whether you have a publicist or not — you can make sure your successes are made public and receive thousands of page views a week. The interface is a simple and easy-to-use blog format. And while many publicists post full-blown press releases complete with art, it's also appropriate to post quick, newsy blurbs about your business. Sometimes just getting the word out is enough.

The Briefing Room has been in operation since July 2006, and it has been gradually improved through the input of our members. Late last year, we completed a 2.0 upgrade, which greatly simplified the interface, making it easier to post pictures among other things. Now we've rolled out this improved interface to our sister publication Sound & Video Contractor. Publicists who wish to join the SVC Briefing Room can do so through Online Editor Jessaca Gutierrez at briefingroom@svconline.com.

As we approach the second anniversary of The Briefing Room, it's appropriate to acknowledge our editors Sutton and Erpelding and their partners in the Penton New Media department. We all want to thank our member publicists for their great participation, input, and collaboration — especially our beta publicists. All these individuals have brought The Briefing Room to life and attracted the development resources for this build out and others to come. Finally, we wish to thank the readers who use The Briefing Room avidly. We all understand that this resource is the first line of information from manufacturers, producers, and facilities themselves. It does not replace the journalistic enterprise that our editors do, but it lays a foundation of data upon which we can build.
