Mo cap without markers
"Do away with ping-pong balls," seemed to be the rallying cry at the Realviz Siggraph booth. That's where the French company presented the latest version of Movimento, its video-based motion-capture system that doesn't need body or facial markers—nor for that matter, any sort of special high-resolution cameras for capturing.
Although the system currently doesn't work in realtime—nor does it handle more than one actor at a time—it's turning out a straightforward buy ($19,000 for the software alone) for face capture by Activision and Framestore CFC, among others. Any mix of cameras and frame rates will do; the cameras can even be zooming or moving, with no recalibration necessary. Realviz claims Movimento is the only system that will also track eye movements. www.realviz.com
