Face capture made easy

Emotions carry via facial expressions, so full, detailed facial motion capture ranks as a top goal of mo-cap systems. The capture technology needed to pull it off, though, has been clumsy to use, with time-consuming data clean up a further problem.

That changed at Siggraph 2006 with the debut of Mova Contour. The software/hardware package, from Steve Perlman of QuickTime designer fame, drew crowds to Mova's booth wanting to see if it lived up to all the breakthrough hype. It did.

Using two separate, yet synchronized, camera systems to simultaneously record visual and geometric information of the subject, Perlman demonstrated how his markerless approach tracks subtle facial changes in realtime.

Meanwhile, Mova and Vicon announced they would offer a realtime full-character capture package employing Vicon's marker-based MX40 cameras for skeletal and prop motion combined with Mova Contour to handle facial capture. www.mova.com
