Discreet Solves Bottleneck

Discreet continues to boost its popular 3ds Max graphics and animation app. Announced at Siggraph, the new version 7 rolls in the standalone Character Studio character motion toolset. Max users can now employ a constraint-based nonlinear animation mixer, highly scalable behavioral crowd simulation, and extensive motion capture filtering and editing.

One new feature, however, could herald a sea change in animation and graphics production. Max 7's new Normal Mapping feature not only accelerates gaming workflow, which normal maps were designed to do, but it can also speed the rendering of the huge data sets typically used for movie and commercial creation.

By using the standard game technique of wrapping detailed normal maps onto low polygon count objects and enabling that to work just as well with highly complex models, formerly computationally intensive scenes now render out orders of magnitude faster, according to the company. www.discreet.com/3dsmax
