HP Revs Workstation Lineup
Workstation chops got a boost with the June release of Intel's next-gen Xeon CPU with 64-bit memory extensions, PCI Express (PCX) bus, and DDR2 memory. PCX offers the most noticeable performance enhancement; in a major shift from the current AGP connection standard, graphics and video garner great benefits from this 2.5Gbps serial point-to-point interconnect.
HP became one of the first companies to use the new product; its workstation family now features the xw4200, xw6200, and xw8200 models. The dual-processor xw6200 and xw8200 gain performance with up to 16GB of faster RAM, double the previous amount of L2 on-chip cache; 16X PCX slot; improved Hyper-Threading; and CPU speeds up to 3.6GHz. The Xeon's Extended Memory 64 Technology (named Intel EM64T) boosts addressable memory space up to 256TB. No more scraped knuckles: The chassis' convenient tool-less design speeds hardware changes. www.hp.com
