Dream Job: Motherhood Movement

MamaZtv cofounders prove modern moms cook way beyond the kitchen.

Joy Rose and Catherine Brabec met years ago when they were both pregnant, and their friendship has seen them through the thick and thin of parenting. Now, the two have birthed a new venture: MamaZtv — online programming that highlights the stories of mothers and other women who nurture.

“MamaZtv dances around the subject of motherhood, but it's also about the fact that we do more than babies,” Rose says.

The two cofounders perfectly illustrate the diverse perspectives represented on the site. Brabec — a Telly Award-winning producer, director, and editor — runs her own production company, Catherine Brabec Productions, and raised her only child as a single, working mom. Rose had four children, became a stay-at-home mom, started a rock band called Housewives on Prozac, and eventually founded the Mamapalooza music and art festival. Mamapalooza literally amplifies the voices of the mothers on its stage, and MamaZtv continues that mission in an online video format, according to Rose and Brabec.

MamaZtv produces 30- to 90-second pieces — including poetic shorts, advertising, video blog-style tell-alls, how-to demos, and music videos — featuring subjects of importance to moms of all ages. The duo uses everything from the Flip Video Ultra videocamera and BlackBerrys to a Panasonic AG-DVX100B camera when capturing content for the site and edits footage using Apple Final Cut Pro.

“We aim to give clear, solid advice in an entertaining, well-produced manner that's crisp so you can get it very quickly,” Brabec says.

Rose and Brabec also offer affordable video production services for those potential women-friendly advertisers and sponsors looking to get the word out about their businesses.

In addition to expanding MamaZtv's video content, Rose and Brabec are preparing a Mamapalooza-branded film series for the fall and working on a feature-length documentary film — The Motherhood Movement: You Say You Want a Revolution — about the evolving relationship of feminism and the mothering experience.

“Women's voices and mother-owned businesses represent the fastest-growing segment of new businesses,” Rose says. “The motherhood movement has taken off, and it needs more avenues to share content, be heard, and get the word out.”
