New high-end CineAlta
The Sony F23 CineAlta camcorder (pictured) came to market last year driven in part by Band Pro Film & Digital's commitment to buy 100 units of the top-of-the-line HD camera.
Now, one year after the debut of the F23 (the “23” is for 2/3in. CCD imager) came word of the F35 CineAlta camera. Announced at the Band Pro press event this past December by Sony's Rob Willox, the camera system will feature a single, Super 35-sized imager ŕ la the Panavision Genesis system. (Sony and Panavision have dissolved their relationship; Sony had provided the 35mm-sized imager and associated electronics.)
While the camera is slated for general release in 2009, some test systems have already turned up in Japan — although
not in full pro configuration. The camcorder won't be cheap. A fully rigged F23 prices around $180,000, and the F35 would be at a premium to that. Willox also reiterated a comment during the F23's introduction in 2006 that Sony is working on a high-end “CineAlta 4K” camera system. No dates were announced for that product.
