Cooke Red

Cooke sees Red

By introducing a “Red Set” of its S4/i lenses for the Red Digital Cinema Red One camera, Cooke Optics adds some high-end gloss to the newbie system.

It's a smart move. While there hasn't been information available by press time about the manufacturer of Red's own brand of lenses, it's not a leap to assume that they're not made by one of the few manufacturers of high-end glass such as Cooke or Carl Zeiss — which, after all, spent decades building their names. Such quality doesn't come cheap. A full set of lenses — including case and cover glass — runs $97,250, including a $1,100 discount. The lenses themselves are presented as four standard Cooke S4/i lenses from 15mm through 100mm (including a zoom). The lenses aren't specific to the Red camera except that they are “specially engraved with red lettering,” which might be enough to set them apart for the enthusiastic Red fan base. As with all recent Cooke lenses, they employ /i metadata-capture technology, which delivers lens data that correlates with timecode. www.cookeoptics.com
