PCM-D50
If you need to collect location audio or want to create your own sound effects, some sort of portable audio recorder is key. Sony's latest entry in an increasingly crowded field is the PCM-D50 handheld audio recorder, released at AES 2007. This inexpensive 96kHz/24-bit recorder comes fitted with two-position (X-Y or Wide) stereo microphones, 4GB internal flash memory, and yes, a slot for Sony's go-it-alone RAM format, the Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo. The body feels rugged — it's made of lightweight aluminum — while the use of conventional AA alkaline batteries makes for easy powering. Lots of optional accessories complete the package.
