HVR-HD1000U

While camcorders such as Sony’s XDCAM EX deservedly garner attention (see D.W. Leitner’s first look here), sometimes workaday pro HDV gear better fits the production. With its modest list price, Sony’s entry-level HVR-HD1000U HDV camcorder warrants a look. Featuring a shoulder-mount design, it supports both HDV and standard-def DV. Features include a ClearVid CMOS sensor; a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 10X optical zoom lens; Super SteadyShot image stabilizer; 6.1-megapixel still-image capture; “soft” function key (assign focus, zoom, brightness, shutter, auto exposure shift, or white balance shift); up to 10 hours operation with optional NP-F970 battery; and multiple digital I/O (HDMI, i.Link, USB, and Memory Stick Duo slot).
