HDV gets serious

Anyone wanting a reason to consider HDV as a competent production tool found an answer with Sony's rollout of its professional HVR-Z1U camcorder, along with the HVR-M10U VTR. There's also HDV editing too, via CineForm's Connect HD plug-in for Sony's Vegas 5 NLE software. The camcorder uses three new one-megapixel, 16:9 Super HAD CCDs with on-chip micro-lens arrays — those help low-light operation. Compared to Sony's consumer model, the pro version offers a range of recording options: HDV and DVCAM images at 60i, 50i, 30, 25 or 24fps — in either SD or HDV. A 12X Zeiss Vario-Sonnar zoom, 24-step iris control, and two balanced XLR input connectors are just a few of the improvements found in the pro version. One interesting twist: chatter on some shooter sites proposes that the camcorder will work in a film-style double system. That would enable productions to capture audio with separate, higher-quality recorders.

Price: $5946 (camera). Under $10,000 (camera, VTR, software)
