Keep your eyes on fast-moving developments in the hardware industry as companies face an increasingly competitive world economy. Panasonic, for example, spun off its remaining shares of JVC earlier this year; by October, the remaining entity, Victor Company of Japan, merged with audio manufacturer Kenwood to create JVC Kenwood Holdings. But it was one month prior to that final hookup, at IBC 2008, that JVC made a move to show its independence, announcing an alliance with Sony to support the XDCAM EX MPEG-2 professional video file format and Sony's solid-state flash-memory S×S cards. At the show, JVC announced that prior to NAB 2009, it would launch the KA-MR100G docking media recorder, its first product to feature native XDCAM EX file recording and an S×S memory-card slot.
