Flash XDR
The quickly growing storage capability of solid-state technology is delivering more options for in-the-field recording. Convergent Design's Flash XDR uses widely available CompactFlash RAM, which comes in at a lower tab (e.g., about $300 for 16GB) than proprietary products. Flash XDR (Xstream Data Recorder) features HD-SDI (with embedded audio and timecode), 1394, LTC timecode, and ASI (MPEG-2 over SDI) I/O. Also on tap: four channels of AES inputs along with two CompactFlash card slots. It's a small, lightweight (about 4 1/2lbs.), battery-powered box that draws only 8W. Besides HDV data rates, users can select XDCAM HD (35Mbps) or 50Mbps 4:2:2 (422P@HL), full-raster 1920×1080/1280×720p video.
