Sony shows first pro OLED use

Sony started selling the first consumer OLED screens this past January, with a list price of $2,500 for the 11in. screen. So visitors to Sony's booth at NAB weren't too surprised to see the 11in. HDVF-EL100, a color professional camera viewfinder. However, although a firm price has not been set yet (the device ships later this year), Sony officials gave an off-the-record quote nearly 10 times the consumer price. We'll have to wait to find out.

Of course, the draw is a contrast ratio claimed to reach 1,000,000:1 with resultant blacks that are just that — black. Wide-angle viewing is no problem either. Color gamut is said to be much better than LCDs too. Perhaps the day isn't far off — after prices drop, of course — when field monitors will no longer need funky shading apparatus. www.sony.com/professional
