Arri goes anamorphic
While the Red Digital Cinema camera system garners a lot of the “what's hot” mindshare these days, Arri has not stood still. Arri may have a viable alternative offering with the new Arriflex D-21 digital cinema camera system, an update of the D-20 with a larger Super 35-sized sensor.
What's interesting here? Arri has designed a system ideally suited for anamorphic shooting. With its 4:3 — not 16:9 — sensor (said to be larger in area than the Red Mysterium), there are still plenty of pixels available on the image target when the inevitable smaller section is used. There's a new Arriraw format, which, as it sounds, contains the D-21's raw sensor information, 2K 16-bit uncompressed Bayer info that can be recorded to either a dual-link Codex system or S.two. Film-loving DPs will feel comfortable with its mechanical shutter and optical viewfinder. www.arri.com
