Low-cost rig for smooth manual focus control.
Adding camcorder-like mounts and a viewfinder to HDSLRs such as Canon's EOS 5D Mark II is becoming a cottage industry.
While companies such as Chicago-based Zacuto have moved quickly to establish themselves, smaller companies are now coming to market with useful gear that often touts lower price points as a reason to look their way.
Case in point: the iDC U-Boat mounting system from Bruce Dorn's iDC Photography. Dorn, a recognized wildlife photographer who also spent time as a Hollywood director, developed his lower-cost rig to allow shooters to easily add on gear such as BeachTek XLR adapters, wireless receivers, fill lights, and more.
One recent addition to his lineup, the iDC Follow-Focus XL, shows his simple just-solve-the-problem approach. Instead of pricey, hard-to-adjust metal gears like some other brands, this one uses a simple rubber-on-rubber friction drive setup to allow smooth manual control of the focus by the operator or an assistant. A second friction wheel included in the package allows control of the zoom itself.
