It's a Tie! Babel and The Departed Win Best Edited Feature/Drama at the 57th Annual ACE Eddie Awards

For only the second time in the 57-year history of the ACE Eddie Awards, two films have tied for Best Edited Feature Film (Drama). “Babel” and “The Departed” shared top honors at the packed ceremony inside the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. “Babel” was edited by Stephen Mirrione, A.C.E. and Douglas Crise, while “The Departed” was edited by Thelma Schoonmaker, A.C.E. The last time two films tied in a feature category was 1989 when “Rain Man” (edited by Stu Linder) tied with “Mississippi Burning” (edited by Gerry Hambling). The Best Edited Feature Film/Comedy or Musical winner was Virginia Katz, A.C.E. for her work on “Dreamgirls.” “An Inconvenient Truth” edited by Jay Cassidy, A.C.E. and Dan Sweitlik, took Best Edited Documentary honors.
Television winners included “The Office,” “The Wire,” “Friday Night Lights,” Prime Suspect 7: The Final Act, Part 1” and “The Path to 9/11: Part 2”
The Student Editing Competition winner was Alex Lamb of Chapman University beating out hundreds of competitors from film schools and universities around the country.
The ACE Eddie Awards, presented by American Cinema Editors, recognizes outstanding editing in eight categories of film, television and documentaries.
Academy Award® winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino received the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honor presented to him by Daryl Hannah. Julia Sweeneyserved as the evenings M.C.
Lifetime Career Achievement Awards went to industry veterans John Soh, A.C.E. and Frank Urioste, A.C.E. Their prolific careers were highlighted with clip reels and praise from friends and colleagues during the affair. The evening was presided over by President of American Cinema Editors, Alan Heim, A.C.E.
Presenters included a long line of friends and colleagues paying tribute to the evening’s honorees and nominees including the Oscar® nominated director of “Babel” Alejandro González Iñárritu, Rosario Dawson, legendary filmmaker Walter Mirsch, Michael Madsen, Jenna Fisher & Angela Kinsey from “The Office,” Kate Walsh & Justin Chambers from “Grey’s Anatomy,” Vanessa Ferlito & Sydney T. Poitier from the upcoming “Grindhouse,” Gregory Itzin from “24” and editor Mark Helfrich, A.C.E. (“X Men: The Last Stand”).
